Adult Sunday School - February 15
This week we began our discussion of Mark III – The Gospel.
The words evangelism and evangelical both come from the Greek word “euangelion”, which means “good news” or “gospel”. As evangelicals, our lives and our church should be defined by the Gospel. So it is important that we correctly understand the essential truths of the Gospel.
Devers explains the Gospel by pointing out common misconceptions about the Gospel. First, the Gospel is not simply that we are okay. Our culture believes that people are basically good. But the Gospel says that we are all sinners, and that the just punishment for this sin is death (Rom 6:23).
The second misconception about the Gospel is that God is not simply love. God is love (1 John 4:8). But God is also holy and just. If we think of God only as love, we miss this important truth.
Protecting these truths protects the nature of Jesus death. Jesus didn’t die as a gesture of love, but as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. This is the essence of the Gospel – that Jesus died for our sins.
Next week we will conclude our discussion about the Gospel.
