Family devotions today

Today Emma and I read Psalm 112 in our family devotions. This is the Psalm for today in our PCF two-year daily Bible reading plan.

Both of us were drawn to the same two verses. ‘[The righteous] is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries’ (Psalm 112.7-8).

Oh, what a good word for us. Emma and I have plenty of opportunities to fear bad news, to be stressed, to have infirm and unsteady hearts. In fact, my heart was unsteady as I awoke this morning. Here is the answer to that unsteadiness: trust in the LORD (v 7). Faith in God’s future grace — his grace constantly flowing to me every moment — is what will make my heart firm and steady. That is God’s word to me this morning. My worry and unsteadiness ultimately has to do with whether I am seeing God for who he really is, and trusting in him.

This Word of God meets my wife and me just where we need it. It strengthens our hearts. It beckons us back to trust in God. Television doesn’t do this. Radio doesn’t do it. God’s Word does.

Thank you, Lord, for your precious Word. Bind our wandering hearts to You.
