Making the most of your commute
I have a commute to work every day that can range between 40 minutes and an hour, depending on traffic. Many of you have similar (or longer) commutes. Here’s a question I’ve thought about that you might want to think about as well: how can I best use my commute to grow in my walk with Jesus?
For me, the answer I came up with was to take advantage of digital audio and the internet. Many churches, ministries, and Christian organizations make wonderful audio resources available at no cost on the internet. These can be downloaded and put onto an iPod/MP3 player or burned onto CDs. My old car didn’t even have a CD player, so I bought a small FM transmitter that plugged into the audio output of my MP3 player.
For example, have you ever wondered what this Calvinism that I keep mentioning really means? DesiringGod.org has audio of a seminar that John Piper taught on the meaning of the TULIP. DesiringGod.org has an amazing library of John Piper’s teaching available at no cost.
There are two organizations, Together for the Gospel (T4G) and The Gospel Coalition, which hold huge conferences in alternating years and post all the audio from these conferences online. Last month T4G held their conference and posted sermons from great preachers like Mark Dever, Ligon Duncan, John MacArthur, John Piper, and RC Sproul.
What a blessing it is, instead of getting frustrated at how slow traffic is moving, or angry at another driver, or just passing the time listening to a CD or the radio, I was able to hear God’s Word preached while I’m making my way to and from work, and to be challenged and encouraged in my walk with Christ!
