Some gospel from Joel

Well done, all you PCF’ers who are continuing with our two-year trek through the Bible! Keep going. We’re almost through the entire Old Testament.

This morning I saw some gospel, some ‘good news,’ in Joel. The heart of this good news is the character of God. God is gracious and merciful and forgiving. That’s why David, when given the choice of punishment by God or by men, says he’d rather fall into the hands of God (2 Samuel 24.14). Here’s the good news as told in Joel 2.12-13:

‘Yet even now,’ declares the Lord, ‘return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.’ Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.’

I’m glad to be serving and worshiping a gracious and merciful God together with you.
