Pastor’s Stephen guide to really short and really good books for summer reading
We have a wealth of outstanding new books in our church library in the back of the sanctuary. They are biblical and they are understandable. I realize some folks at PCF aren’t ‘readers’ by nature. So, we’ve purchased some outstanding books that are really good and really short. Here is my list of seven recommended really short and really good books. All of these are in our church library. Don’t read junk this summer – read quality, enriching material.
The Gospel-Centered Life, by Steve Timmis and Tim Chester. These two guys are church planters in England. We had Tim Chester speak here at PCF a year ago. Everything Timmis and Chester write is simple, clear, thought-provoking, and biblical.
Your Money Counts, by Howard Dayton. Dayton is the co-founder of the well-known Christian ministry Crown Financial Ministries. This book is a simple, short, and practical guide to managing your finances in a way that honors God.
Business for the Glory of God, by Wayne Grudem. You spend a huge proportion of your life at work. What does that have to do with God? Read this tiny book by a giant intellect and find out.
Stop Dating the Church, by Joshua Harris. Are you just ‘dating’ the church? Are you committed? Are you cautious? Time to get more serious about church.
You: An Introduction, by Michael Jensen. Read this thin and biblical book and learn what the Bible says about you. The author is Australian but, sorry, the accent doesn’t come through on the printed page.
Living the Cross-Centered Life, by C.J. Mahaney. An excellent, simple, clear book on the huge practical implications of the cross for everyday living. We never, ever move beyond the cross.
Short Steps for Long Gains, by Simon and Kathy Manchester. Some husbands and dads have taken me up on my challenge to read the Bible and pray with your spouse and children. But you’re not sure what to talk about. Here’s help! A month’s worth of biblical conversation topics to discuss with your children.
