The once for all Passion, the continuing Compassion
William Penn was a Quaker and the founder of Pennsylvania. I’m reading his book ‘Some Fruits of Solitude’ and finding much of what he says to be profound and helpful. It’s not always entirely easy to understand him because he was living and writing in the 1600-1700’s, but it’s worth some effort. Here’s one line I’ve been pondering:
‘For though our Saviour’s Passion is over, his Compassion is not. That never fails his humble, sincere Disciples: In him, they find more than all that they lose in the World.’
Jesus’ passion — his suffering unto death on the cross — is over. It is completed. But the compassion that led him to endure the cross continues on and constantly, moment by moment, comes to his disciples.
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for your continuing compassion.
